Now that winter appears to have retreated to the southern hemisphere, your once snow-covered roof is now basking in the spring sunshine.  What to do? Perhaps a trip up to your roof is in order. So dust off your ladder, slap on some gloves and do some spring roof inspections.

Clean those gutters

You’ll likely have some accumulated debris after this long winter. Leaves and twigs always seem to find their way into the gutters after a long winter. It’s always a good idea to get a gutter scoop to help remove the gunk from your gutters. If you see piles of sand-like granules, take note: this could be a sign of an aging roof. If you find lots of grit, give your roofing company a call. Quickly deteriorating shingles are not something you want to wait to act on, as water could be seeping into your home. These leaks, if left unattended, can cause serious structural problems. An ounce of prevention, in this case, is worth a pound of cure.

Take a look around

As long as you’re up there cleaning the gutters, you may as well have a look around.  Do you see any loose, missing, or broken shingles? Are any shingles blistering, curling at the edges, or buckling? How about moss or lichens? Is there any cracked or missing caulk? These are all signs of a roof at the end of its lifecycle. If you’re unsure, hire a professional to help you with your Spring Roof Inspections. Again, making sure your roof is in tip-top shape will help to ensure that everything underneath it remains in good condition, too.

If the spring thaw reveals a roof that is in less-than-optimal condition, give us a call and we’d be happy to provide you with a no-obligation quote.
