If you have a leak dripping into your living room, you probably need a new roof. And if a strong gust of wind distributes weathered shingles into your yard, you probably need a new roof. But what if there aren’t so obvious signs?
Here are seven things to look for to determine if you need a new roof.
1. Roof age
Most roofing systems are designed to last from 20 to 25 years. If your roof is older than this, you should consider calling your trusted roofing company to come to take a look.
2. Curled or cupped shingles
If your shingles are starting to curl at the edges, your roof might be worn out.
3. Valleys
It is extremely important that the shingles in the roof’s valleys are in good shape. These valleys help to channel water into the gutters and off the house. You definitely don’t want to risk ignoring the valleys.
4. Missing or bald shingles
If you have any bare patches on your roof, or if the granules have been worn off by the elements, you should look into getting a roof inspection. Check the gutters for granules, too.
5. Flashing.
Flashing helps to make your roof watertight. If the flashing is in poor condition, you may be susceptible to leaks.
6. Daylight through the roof boards
Check your attic to see if there is any daylight coming through the roof boards. Also, check for moisture in the insulation.
7. The neighbors are getting new roofs.
We’re not advocating keeping up with the Joneses. Rather, neighborhoods are often built around the same time and are exposed to similar elements. If your neighbors’ roofs are starting to wear out, yours could be, too. Do consider these seven signs every time if the roof change is necessary.
