You probably don’t spend much of your free time thinking about roof ventilation. And why should you? If your roof is properly ventilated, you won’t have any reason to think about it. Your home will stay relatively clean, dry, and comfortable. But what if your roof doesn’t have proper ventilation? How would you know whether or not you need new vents? Start by reading the list below. If you’ve noticed any of these issues, you may need better roof ventilation.
Roof Ventilation Basics
You Have Weather Damage in Your Attic
The attic is one of the first places to see damage if you don’t have proper roof ventilation. Ventilation provides your attic’s first line of defense from extreme weather. It allows air to escape from the room. Without ventilation, the air gets trapped, causing warped wood and other weather-related damage.
If you don’t have adequate roof ventilation, you may also notice mold and mildew in different parts of the house. Good roof ventilation allows moisture to leave your house safely. Poor ventilation traps moisture, allowing mold and mildew to form.
You Have High Heating and Cooling Bills
If you have high heating and cooling bills that can’t be explained by other issues (old filters, poor insulation, etc.), your roof ventilation might be the problem. When air gets trapped inside the house, your heating and cooling system has to work harder to maintain your preferred temperatures. High-quality vents provide better circulation, which takes some of the strain off your temperature regulation system.
Your Roof Has Icicles in the Winter
What did your roof look like last winter? If it had icicles, it probably needs better roof ventilation. Icicles form when the heat from inside your attic melts the snow on your roof. The melted snow runs off the roof only to freeze again as icicles. When the warm air can escape from the attic, it doesn’t stick around to melt the snow. When the air can’t escape, icicles stick around to cause damage to your roof.
